Wood Furniture Design Workshop (Mon & Tue 11–12 Jul)

This two day ‘hands on’ workshop will explore a variety of effective construction techniques. You will explore easily available tools, materials and processes accessible to beginners, artists and crafts people alike. Focusing on designs such as the ‘Crate’ or ‘Sedia’ chairs, learn to make your very own piece of furniture.

What Will I Learn
How to make furniture from plans by two design icons: Gerrit Reitveld and Enzo Mari. Instruction will be provided to complete at least one of several functional furniture items and will explore the highly inventive techniques in Enzo Mari’s AutoProgettzione and Rietveld’s crate series, which are adaptable to a myriad of personal projects for versatile, economic and sustainable constructions for art or design. Identification and uses of commonly available woods, tools & fixings. How to assemble an affordable versatile kit of hand tools and their use. Measuring and marking out. How to read drawings/plans and prepare a cutting list. Safe use of woodshop machines and portable electric tools.
What Will I Do
Gain confidence through practical use of hand tools, power tools and gain lots of transferable skills for artists, makers, students and DIYers alike. You will use timber and plywood to cut out, prepare, assemble and finish a piece of furniture. Use battery Drill-drivers, bandsaw, chopsaw, sander, track saw. How to make flat packable designs and customise/hacks for extra features or personalisation Sorting any wobbles and basic finishes. You will take home a chair, table or bookshelf you have made! NB. this can be flatpacked & easily transported.
Additional Information
It is essential to wear old clothes and strong footwear.
Safe workshop practice will be covered.
The course will focus on working in planed timber and plywood.
Basic tools and material will be provided to complete one project
Students can purchase extra if required for custom projects
