We will follow this up by exploring colouring through making bowl forms to also understand reinforcement of plaster to enable it be cast hollow. We will end the day with by discussing possible personal projects for the following day and other techniques that participants might wish to see demonstrated. \nDay 2\nPersonal Project and Extrapolation The second day is an open-ended exploration of the techniques learnt on day one through the development of a small personal project. The tutor will be on hand to assist and go over techniques explored on the first day and offer advice and possible routes for development. There will also be small demonstrations of various forms of finishing plaster and concrete and discussions focused on where best to use each material and alternative materials and methods. \nPlease feel free to bring material to experiment with for mould making and casting into.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Additional Information\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Please note there will be a 1 hour lunch break each day (lunch not provided)\nBasic materials are included\nOpen to all levels including beginners\nHealth and Safety briefing will be given\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What Should I Bring\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Please bring a notebook/sketchbook\nIt is essential to wear old clothes and strong footwear \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n CLICK HERE TO BOOK THIS COURSE ON EVENTBRITE\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n CLICK HERE TO DOWLOAD PDF OF COURSE DETAILS

SUMMARY:Casting & Sculpture in Jesmonite (Sat & Sun\, 17 - 18 Oct 2026)
DESCRIPTION:This two day course is an introduction to working with Jesmonite. You will have the opportunity to work hands-on\, constructing geometric and curved forms\, creating decorative effects using pigment and you will learn how to replicate other materials and textures using Jesmonite.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dates & Times \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th October 2026 10.00 – 16.00 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Session & Places \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 2 Sessions with 12 places on the course \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Cost \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n £295.00 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Tutor \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Sarah Fortais\nwww.sarahfortais.com\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What Will I Learn \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n How to use both Jesmonite systems to cast from different types of moulds\, how to colour Jesmonite\, how to laminate it and how to use it to mimic other materials. \nJesmonite can be used to replicate the appearance and texture of any surface finish\, and even the finest of detail. It can mimic the appearance of most materials such as stone\, wood\, leather and fabric. It is strong and durable\, can be pigmented to any colour and used to create decorative surface effects. It is often used as lightweight alternative to stone and concrete. It has become an increasingly popular material widely used by artists\, designers and prop-makers. Jesmonite is a brand name for a group of products that have either a gypsum or cementitious base and a water based acrylic resin making it kinder to the environment than other resins.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What Will I Do \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Day 1:Introduction to the two different types of Jesmonite before experimentation with mould making techniques using Polypropylene sheets that can be cut\, scored and folded to make geometric and curved moulds to cast into. \nYou will learn how to use Jesmonite pigments to create decorative effects such as Terrazzo and marbling and make use of metal powders to produce imitation metal casts. We will finish the day by making a small\, simple silicone mould ready for tomorrow and finishing processes such as polishing. \nDay 2:Using the silicone moulds\, we will look at laminating Jesmonite to produce very strong thin castings before progressing onto making larger moulds (either in polypropylene\, wood\, card or moulds brought from home) to learn to cast hollow objects. In both cases we will be using the cementitious Jesmonite casting system to explore the types of imitiation stone finishes. \nWe will finish the day by looking at various forms of finishing our Jesmonite casts including acid etch\, wet and dry polishing and wire brushing to reveal the metal finishes. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Additional Information \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Please note there will be a 1 hour lunch break each day (lunch is not provided)\nBasic materials are all included.\nPlease note the cost of the course includes 1 kg of jesmonite.
