It can mimic the appearance of most materials such as stone\, wood\, leather and fabric. It is strong and durable\, can be pigmented to any colour and used to create decorative surface effects. It is often used as lightweight alternative to stone and concrete. It has become an increasingly popular material widely used by artists\, designers and prop-makers. Jesmonite is a brand name for a group of products that have either a gypsum or cementitious base and a water based acrylic resin making it kinder to the environment than other resins.\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				What Will I Do \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Day 1:Introduction to the two different types of Jesmonite before experimentation with mould making techniques using Polypropylene sheets that can be cut\, scored and folded to make geometric and curved moulds to cast into. \nYou will learn how to use Jesmonite pigments to create decorative effects such as Terrazzo and marbling and make use of metal powders to produce imitation metal casts. We will finish the day by making a small\, simple silicone mould ready for tomorrow and finishing processes such as polishing. \nDay 2:Using the silicone moulds\, we will look at laminating Jesmonite to produce very strong thin castings before progressing onto making larger moulds (either in polypropylene\, wood\, card or moulds brought from home) to learn to cast hollow objects. In both cases we will be using the cementitious Jesmonite casting system to explore the types of imitiation stone finishes. \nWe will finish the day by looking at various forms of finishing our Jesmonite casts including acid etch\, wet and dry polishing and wire brushing to reveal the metal finishes. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Additional Information \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Please note there will be a 1 hour lunch break each day (lunch is not provided)\nBasic materials are all included.\nPlease note the cost of the course includes 1 kg of jesmonite. The pewter we use for this course is lead free and has a high tin content which makes it soft to work and very good for hammering and shaping after it has been cast. Traditionally pewter has been used for cups and plates but it can also be used to cast metal sculptures and is very good for making fine intricate work. It also works well combined with wood or stone. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				What Will I Do \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Day oneExperiment with different waxes to make a small sculpture to cast. You may also bring in a wax you have already made to cast\, but please be aware that due to the rising costs of pewter try to keep the wax relatively small (eg. the size of a lemon). \nDay twoAdd casting ‘runners’ and ‘risers’ to your wax sculptures in preparation for casting\, then make plaster moulds. These moulds will then be heated to burn out the wax which will leave a negative cavity to be filled with molten pewter. \nDay threeMelt and cast molten pewter into your plaster moulds. Allow to cool and then chisel out the casts and clean them up. \nDay fourFinish your artwork\, polishing\, patination\, welding and cold working of pewter. This will be followed by instruction on how to set up your own pewter casting works. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Additional Information \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Beginners and those more experienced are welcome.\nPlease note there will be a 1 hour lunch break each day (lunch not provided)\nBasic materials are included. Traditionally pewter has been used for cups and plates but it can also be used to cast metal sculptures and is very good for making fine intricate work.
